Food is one of the delights of Thai culture. Thai cuisine has sometimes been described as a cross between Indian and Chinese cooking. It is true that Buddhist influences from India and trading contacts with China have contributed to making the personality of Thai cuisine. But, did you know that it was the Portuguese who first brought chillies to Thailand in the Sixteenth century? Thais have been clever in combining foreign influences with our own native herbs and spices to create a subtle and aromatic blend of flavours unique to our culture.
Thai cuisine is based on a system of five flavours: sweet, sour, salty, bitter and of course, hot, which are derived mainly from root vegetables herbs and spices such as garlic, lemongrass, shallots, limes, galangal, cumin, coriander, cardamom and chillies to name but a few. These are preferred to stronger spices which is why Thai curries (Gaeng in Thai) are generally much lighter than Indian curries.
The basis for Thai cuisine is a special variety of long grained rice which is prized for it’s delicate flavour and is the ideal accompaniment to a wide variety of meat, fish and vegetable dishes. Coconut milk is widely used in their preparation; a rich creamy liquid which provides a gentle flavour. Thai food is not just tasty but also extremely healthy.
Thai Pavilion does not use Monosodium Glutamate in it’s preparations. Some of our ingredients however already contain it on arrival from the suppliers. Please let us know if you are allergic to this and our preparations will be entirely free of Monosodium glutamate.
